Charismatic presenter to give keynote address at Festival of Postgraduate Research

Issued on 18 June 2010

A renowned historian is to address a gathering of business and professional leaders, staff and postgraduate students at the University of Leicester.

Historian Bettany Hughes, famous as a charismatic presenter on a variety of subjects ranging from the Spartans to the Islamic concept of time, is a well established researcher and popular face of documentaries.

She is a regular contributor to the national press and radio, and her work has even been an inspiration to films, such as ‘300’. She will be delivering the keynote speech at the Festival of Postgraduate Research on Thursday 24th June.

Dr. Monica Latham, Postgraduate Events Manager said: “I’m really pleased Bettany accepted our invitation to give the keynote speech at the Festival of Postgraduate Research. This event is about the importance of communicating research to the wider public, and she’s certainly the person to talk about that. Her success in bringing History to the masses is commendable.”

The Festival of Postgraduate Research is an annual event in which 50 competitively selected doctoral researchers present their work to the general public. The Leicester local community and employers come along to judge the presentations. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Leicester will be visiting the event this year.

Dr. Latham commented “All disciplines are featured in the Festival, however, this is the first time we have a keynote speaker from an Arts and Social Sciences background, which is a way of highlighting the fact that these areas are equally important at the University of Leicester. We are famous for the discovery of DNA fingerprinting amongst other achievements, and there are many distinctive world-class achievements across disciplines in our Arts and Social Sciences.”

The Festival of Postgraduate Research is a free event, open to the public. It takes place on Thursday 24th June from 11:00-1:00 p.m. The Award Ceremony, where Bettany Hughes will deliver a keynote speech on the importance of communicating research beyond academia, takes place from 2p.m.
