Management and Employment Relations Expert joins University of Leicester
Leading advisor on organisational achievement returns to city roots

An international expert on business and management has returned to his Leicester roots to take up the role of Director of Research at the University of Leicester’s School of Management.
Leicester-born and educated Professor Stephen Wood has a number of government-advisory roles in the field of employment relations and is a specialist on the impact of management on an organisation’s performance and employees’ well-being.
Now he has joined the University’s School of Management as Professor of Management and Director of Research.
He said: “Management research in the UK is at an interesting stage of development, and a social science-based management school such as Leicester's is in a good position to take advantage of the opportunities that will emerge in the coming few years. Born and schooled in Leicester, I am delighted to be coming to the University of Leicester to help the School make a significant contribution to the next stage of management research. "
His recent research includes the nature of high involvement management and its impact on well-being and organizational performance; team working amongst software engineers; staff morale in mental health in-patient care; family-friendly management, its nature, predictors of use and performance effects; work-non-work conflict amongst portfolio workers; job design in call centres; the social and economic challenges of nanotechnology.
Educated at Wyggeston Boys’ Grammar School, Leicester- now Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth L College, next to the University - Professor Wood was previously at the Institute of Work Psychology, University of Sheffield where he was Deputy Director and Research Chair.
Prior to joining Sheffield he was Reader in Industrial Relations at the London School of Economics. Professor Wood is currently a Member of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skill’s Steering Committee for the Workplace Employee Relations Survey of 2011 and Co-Convenor (with Simon Francis, DWP) Mental Health and Employment Network. He is a member of the International Advisory Board for the British Journal of Industrial Relations, and was Chief Editor 1999-2003.
Professor Wood has published 11 books, numerous book chapters and refereed journal articles. He has obtained funding for numerous projects, including £5m in the past ten years.
Over 35 years Professor Wood has provided policy advice to a range of organisations, public and private, and contributed to public life in a number of ways. Consultancies include an evaluation on the impact of the post–1997 Employment Relations Legislation on corporate performance for the Department of Trade and Industry. He was Chair of the Management Board of the Health and Safety Commission’s Workers Safety Adviser Challenge Fund, 2004-7 and a member of the Employment Task Group for the 2004 Health White Paper.
Professor Wood is a life-long Leicester City supporter, whose interests include football, athletics, and reading.
