Leicester ranked as top University in the East Midlands

Times Good University Guide places Leicester in UK’s top 15

The University of Leicester has confirmed its position as one of the UK’s leading universities – it is ranked as the top University in the East Midlands by The Times newspaper Good University Guide league table published today (June 3).

The new table ranks Leicester 15th and follows top 20 rankings this academic year by The Independent, Sunday Times and The Guardian.

Richard Taylor, Director of Marketing & Communications, said: “Leicester has been ranked as a top 15 UK university by the Good University Guide for two consecutive years.

“This outstanding performance comes in a year when we are also the Times Higher University of the Year. Leicester has achieved outstanding results in student satisfaction, research impact and our recruitment stands at record levels.

“Leicester is the only top 20 university that meets its government indicators for inclusivity. We’re proof that you can compete with the best whilst opening up the competition for everyone."

The Times Good University Guide 2010 league tables also placed 1994 Group universities –of which Leicester is a member - top in six regions of the UK.

Paul Marshall, Executive Director of the 1994 Group said: “Once again major national university league tables highlights the strength of 1994 Group universities. Achieving top place in six regions of the UK is confirmation that our member universities are second to none in delivering a world-class academic experience."

"In a very competitive job market, deciding on which university to attend is an increasing important choice. Savvy students have worked out that 1994 Group universities deliver the very best academic experience through a combination of world-class research, a commitment to research-led teaching and the highest levels of student satisfaction.”

The league tables place the University of St Andrews as the top university in Scotland and 4th in the overall rankings; Durham University is the top university in the North East and 8th in the rankings and the University of Exeter is the top university in the South West placed 9th overall. The University of Leicester comes top of all universities in the East Midlands, Lancaster University is the most highly rated in the North West and the University of York takes top place in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
