Operational Note

Terry Wogan is receiving an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at the 3pm ceremony on Friday July 16. The estimated time for the degree to be conferred on him is 3.45pm

We have provisionally arranged a 20 minute slot between 2.15pm-2.35pm when Sir Terry could be available to the media, subject to his consent (10 minutes for film/video crews and 10 mins for radio/print reporters). This will be in the side room of the De Montfort Hall where the academic procession assembles.

Sir Terry will then go for his stage briefing and to be robed where there will be picture opportunities.

The ceremony will start at 3pm prompt with a procession inside De Montfort Hall, onto the stage whereafter proceedings will begin.

At approx 3.45pm, the public orator will address the congregation about Sir Terry and he will have the opportunity to respond from the podium. Sir Terry's speech will be a max of three minutes.

The press office will endeavour to gain access to copies of the oration (by the University Orator) –the press office will not have access to the response that Sir Terry makes.

Thereafter, the degrees will be awarded to students.

The proceedings will end at approx 4.45pm

Thereafter, official University photographs will be taken by the University photographer and then, at approx 5pm, there will be an opportunity for more pix and interviews –subject to Sir Terry’s consent..

Media are allowed to film/photograph Sir Terry from 2.40pm onwards eg getting robed, processing etc. INTERVIEWS ARE ALLOWED BETWEEN 2.15-2.35 AND AFTER THE CEREMONY (5PM APPROX) subject to Sir Terry’s consent.

Television crews will be allocated fixed filming points. Please be in situ before the ceremony begins, in order to minimise disruption to proceedings. To discuss possibilities of getting feeds/material from the University's own camera crews please contact Jon Shears on jems1@le.ac.uk well in advance of the day (leave message).
