Checking Web Quota
Summary
Information about the Web space you are given when you get a Web account with the University, including how to look after it and how to apply for an increase in size above the initial quota of 20mb.
The ability to check your web quota using the CWIS editor quota viewer will be removed on the 21st November 2011. (This work encompasses removal of the CWIS editor, permissions editor, drive mapping, password changer and quota viewer). Alternatives are available:
- CWIS editor - use Dreamweaver or Contribute.
- Permissions editor - use SFTP transfer (eg using WinSCP) and edit with any text editor.
- Password changer and quota viewer - login to www.le.ac.uk using PuTTY (or other ssh client) and you will be presented with a menu for these features.
- Drive Mapping - use Dreamweaver, Contribute, WinSCP or other SFTP client.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact ithelp@le.ac.uk marking your message 'FAO Multimedia Services'.
Everyone who has a Web account will automatically be assigned an amount of space on the university server to store their Web Site's pages. That initial quota is usually 20 megabytes and can be increased if there is a genuine need for more space. This is usually more than enough to store a large site with optimised images and some associated resources. If more space is needed then it is possible to Apply for Additional Quota but approval of the application will be based on your use of the existing space you have - if it is clear that the space already allocated is not being used economically then the quota increase may be reduced or refused. This is because there is a finite amount of space to share out amongst all users on the server.
If you knowingly or unknowingly exceed your quota your account will be temporarily frozen and you will not be able to upload anymore pages. Account holders are encouraged to make economical use of their Web space. If you find you can't upload your pages then this may be the reason. It is always a good idea to keep an eye on your quota.
To check your Web quota allocation and usage:
1. Download and install PuTTY from CFS software.
2. Open PuTTY and you will see a screen as follows - all you need to do is fill in the hostname as www.le.ac.uk and the port as 22.

3. With the hostname filled in click the Open button. A black screen will open up and prompt you for your CFS username.

4. Enter your CFS username and press return. The screen will then prompt you for your CWIS (web) password.

5. Enter your CWIS (web) password and press return - a series of numbered options will appear.

6. Choose an option by entering one of the numbers associated with the choices.

7. If you choose 'Check Quota' your current quota will be displayed on a screen as follows:

You can return to menu screen at any time by pressing any key.
