The basics
Summary
A quick overview of the main useful things you need to know about for maintaining a site at the University.
To have and maintain a Web Site at the university you need to have a Web account.
There are some key features/concepts of accounts that it is useful to have an understanding of. These features are summarised below and then explained in more detail on the subsequent pages in this section.
Web Accounts
There are only two types of Web account, INDIVIDUAL and DEPARTMENTAL. Individual Web Accounts are typically intended for the person who has lone responsibility for a small to medium sized site e.g a centre, research group. Departmental Web Accounts are aimed at the large departmental sites where a departmental Web Maintainer has control over numerous Web pages and may be sharing responsibility for their maintenance with one or more other people.
Passwords
Every Web account has an associated password which is totally private and when used with an account's username allows access to your Web area. Even the Computer Centre have no means of retrieving your password should you forget it. If passwords are forgotten then a new one will need to be issued and this is usually done by the Information desk at the Computer Centre.
Web Quota
Everyone who has a Web account will automatically be assigned an amount of space on the university server to store their Web Site's pages. That initial quota is usually 20 megabytes and can be increased if there is a genuine need for more space. If you exceed your quota your account will be temporarily frozen and you will not be able to upload anymore pages. Account holders are encouraged to make economical use of their Web space.
Web Access Control Facility
It is possible to control/change access permission for Web pages that you own, without resorting to having a password protected area. The great benefit of using this system is that simply by checking a tick box you can change access to all, some or just one of your Web pages.
Ownership
In order to be able to upload files to an area on the University server you need to be the 'owner' of that area (folder). Every folder on the University server is 'owned' by someone. You can only affect areas that you 'own'. Ownerships means that your Web account has been associated with that area and only you with your username and password can get into that area to change things. Ownership of files and folders is usually organised by a departmental Web Maintainer and implemented by the Web Editor at the Computer Centre.
University Web Structure
Almost every department, school and office that has a site stores it on the main University servers. Each Web Site has an associated folder and most of these folders follow a two-letter department code naming regime which permeates throughout the University servers. e.g. the Computer Centre site is stored in a folder called 'cc'. This space on the server is where the pages that are 'live' on the Web exist.
