Having graduated from the University of Birmingham with a first degree in Law, Neil completed his postgraduate qualifications here at the Department of Criminology, graduating with an MA in Criminology in 1999 and a PhD in Criminology in 2007. He has worked at the Department since 1999, during which time he has conducted research on behalf of the British Oil Security Syndicate and the Dixons group to investigate issues of retail security; the Charlton Athletic Race Equality (CARE) Partnership to analyse the development of its anti-racist initiatives; and Greater Manchester Police to evaluate the effectiveness of their diversity training programme. More recently, he has conducted a series of research projects commissioned respectively by Suffolk County Council, Northamptonshire Police and Warwickshire Police designed to assess the problem of rural racism and minority ethnic households’ perceptions of existing service provision and support networks.
In addition to his research on the subject of rural racism, Neil has published more broadly on issues of racist violence, community safety and victimisation, with a particular interest in racist and religious hate crime, community cohesion and policing diversity. He is co-editor (with Jon Garland) of Rural Racism, published by Willan in October 2004; is co-author of Hate Crime: Impact, Causes, and Consequences (also with Jon Garland), to be published in April 2009 by Sage; and is editor of Hate Crime: Concepts, Policy, Future Directions, to be published in April 2010 by Willan.
