Following undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Birmingham in the early 60's, I became a lecturer of Chemistry at the University of Aberdeen and at the University of Leicester. In 1987, I became professor of Inorganic Chemistry and was Head of the Department until 1996. Since 1997, I have been the director of the Physical Sciences Budget Centre and Pro-Dean of Science and recently was elected Pro-Vice Chancellor.
My research interests are in Inorganic Fluorine Chemistry and the chemistry of the Noble gases and have published more than 300 research papers and a book in these areas. I have held a number of public appointments in chemical science and education including EPSRC, the HEFCE, the OST and the RSC. Locally, I have served on the Council of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society for many years and was it's President in 1996/7, I have been Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman of the East Midlands Section of the RSC and a founder member of the BAA's local section.
Since I am interested in the popularisation of science and chemistry I frequently lecture to schools and lay audiences within the U.K. My demonstration Lectures on Fluorine Chemistry and Relationships between Science and Visual Art have now been given to more than 150,000 people.
Outside Chemistry I am an active artist and for many years I was co-editor of the International Art Journal 'Leonardo.' I used to exhibit nationally but now, as life has become more hectic, painting is limited to my holidays.
