Summary of interview item: Coffee and Café. Compilation of interview extracts describing the cafés and coffee houses of Leicester from 1900. The coffee houses of the Leicester Coffee House Company are described in detail, including their clientele, decor, food and atmosphere. The origins of the coffee house being started by a temperance company is recalled and their high class reputation. A portable café in the Market until the First World War, then the Corn Exchange, before returning to the Market in 1968, is described along with details of the food sold from it and the people using it. Other cafés of Leicester are recalled, such as Winn's, Café Royal, Kunzel's, Sunset Café, Mikado, and the British Restaurant and British Canteen of the Second World War.
