Campus development
The University of Leicester is the custodian of a large, valuable and impactful estate that has shaped our academic mission over the last hundred years. We have an obligation to our colleagues and students, now and in the future, to ensure that we maintain and improve our estate for the next century and beyond. Over the next ten years, we will be developing new buildings and improving existing spaces to meet the needs of our academic and research communities and support our staff and students.
Our latest investments
Most recently, we have:
- redeveloped the Percy Gee Building, home to our Students’ Union
- upgraded our facilities at Brookfield, giving our School of Business a new home
- regenerated the Freemen’s Common area, creating new student residences, a Teaching and Learning Centre, a social space to relax and study, a state-of-the art staff workspace, and a multi-storey car park
- built and launched Space Park Leicester, a world-leading space and Earth observation cluster.
Fielding Johnson Building
Work to improve the external structural of the Fielding Johnson Building will begin in September 2024. The work, which will address the condition of the roof and windows, will take place in phases over the next three years.
Our ten-year Campus Masterplan
Looking to the future, we need to proactively manage, improve and maintain our estate whilst protecting and enhancing our existing buildings and developing new builds to support key areas of student growth in the future.
Our Campus Masterplan sets the direction for the development of our estate for the next ten years, and includes:
- upgrading the infrastructure and condition of our existing buildings
- enhancing the thermal efficiency of buildings and reducing energy use as we work towards our goal of net zero carbon by 2040
- disposing of aged buildings that don’t meet our current requirements and thereby reducing total backlog maintenance and operating costs
- an ongoing programme of minor works and maintenance interventions carried out to improve the condition of internal spaces across campus
- upgrading and improving accessibility to provide a campus experience that is equitable, comfortable and welcoming to all.
