Binomial and negative-binomial distributions

Binomial Distribution

You should all be familiar with the term "normal distribution". There are other patterns that data can take of which the binomial is one. It should also be a favourite of students because there is no need for a test to assess whether it does follow a binomial distribution. Data that have only two outcomes and are nominal, are binomial data. Examples are on/off, male/female, dead/alive.

Comparisons of such data are easily achieved with non-parametric tests or Chi2. However, you may also wish to predict the proportions of male and female turtles emerging from a nest. Since the sex outcome is often temperature dependent, it is a very moot point in terms of conservation. For a given year the proportions can be estimated from previously known data.
