BDRA Discussion Forum: Elearning and Intellectual Property Issues
22nd November
- Facilitated by Roger Dence, E-Learning Research Associate, BDRA
With current rapid developments in e-learning technologies, consideration of intellectual property (IP) issues is of growing relevance and importance to all involved in teaching and learning processes.
The advent of the VLE in widespread use already poses IP challenges for course designers, content authors/providers and course deliverers, in terms of the creation, sourcing, distribution and use/versioning/reuse of individual, own institution and third party materials. New technologies, such as webcasts/podcasts, mobile learning, wikis/blogs, coupled with the ability to integrate material derived from one medium into another, are increasing the complexity of the IP issues involved.
The University's Beyond Distance Research Alliance is hosting a discussion forum on the 22nd November to explore some of these issues. This informal session will draw on recent BDRA research work as well as external perspectives, and provide an opportunity for cross-faculty exchange of experience, knowledge and thinking. The meeting will be facilitated by Roger Dence, E-Learning Research Associate with the BDRA.

A Seminar on Organisational Change
Making Change Happen
Tuesday 17 October
Prof. Dr. Betty Collis
Abstract:
Betty will reflect on two successful change processes in which she has been centrally involved: one in a university, the other in a corporate learning setting. In both, the key was to focus on implementing a philosophy about learning activities rather than on new ways for preparing and presenting content. The "Contributing Student" philosophy for learning activities was a key driver for change in both settings.

eLearning Workshop
21st September 2006
With the Colleges - University of Leicester Network (CULN). The workshop will provide a good overview of the current research and developments in eLearning technologies that are relevant to a wide range of FE and HE settings. The session will also provide an opportunity to meet colleagues from across HE and FE to share and discuss future potential areas of collaboration.
Workshop sessions will include:
- Keynote: Professor Gilly Salmon - Providing an overview of different 'e-learning planets'
- Short presentation on the various e-learning projects at the University of Leicester, and Beyond Distance Research Alliance
- Group discussions on specific learning technologies and how they contribute to student learning e.g. podcasts, wikis, blogs, structured online discussion forms.
Pushing the Boundaries: Setting the E-learning Research Agenda
International Conferences 10th and 11th January 2006
Beyond Distance Research Alliance brought together researchers and practitioners from UK, US and Australia who were interested in e-learning research. The aims of the conferences were:
- to focus on laying out an agenda for research for the next 3 years
- to raise the profile of e-learning research beyond the ‘what works’ and into scenarios where we can
- deflect the ‘technology’, ‘VLE’ driven narratives in universities in the area of e-learning and instead address e-learning as a business and pedagogical development opportunities associated with positive change
- identify excellent and appropriate ways to underpin e-learning strategy and policy that directly impact on the student experience and student learning for the 21st century through ‘embedding’ and ‘transformation’
- Promote research into innovative teaching in an inter-disciplinary, intra-disciplinary, cross professional, multi institutional ways through building principles and models for testing through work in practice and in context
